When an individual makes the important decision to seek help for substance abuse or addiction, selecting an appropriate rehab program is crucial. There are several different types of rehab that take varying approaches and have different settings. Understanding the options can help choose the type of rehab that will provide the best chance of success.

Inpatient Rehab

Inpatient or residential rehab centers provide intensive treatment while having the individual live onsite at the facility. These programs allow the individual to be fully immersed in treatment and removed from environments or triggers that could lead to relapse.

Inpatient rehab programs can last anywhere from one month to a year or longer if needed. They utilize techniques such as individual counseling, group therapy, medication management, nutritional planning, complementary treatments like art therapy or yoga, and community support group participation like Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

Partial Hospitalization Drug Rehab

Partial hospitalization drug rehab programs (PHP) are a middle ground between inpatient residential care and standard outpatient rehab. In a PHP program, the individual continues to live at home but commutes daily to the rehab center, typically for 6-8 hours of treatment and returning home later each afternoon.

The services and types of therapies utilized in partial hospitalization are similar to those provided in residential rehab but are offered on this less than full-time yet still intensive basis. Support and supervision are still emphasized but the individual can apply what they are learning in their home environment each night.

Outpatient Rehab

Outpatient rehab allows the patient to continue living at home throughout their treatment. Sessions are typically held once or twice per week at minimum and can increase from there depending on what the treatment plan entails.

Like the other program types, outpatient rehab utilizes counseling, behavioral therapies, medication management if needed, relapse prevention education, and community support groups. While less intensive than partial or inpatient programs, for some individuals, outpatient rehab provides enough support for them to find success in recovery.

Determining the Best Type of Program

Assessing an addiction issue on a case-by-case basis is important when deciding what type of rehab is most appropriate. Factors like length of substance abuse history, presence of dual diagnoses or mental health issues, prior attempts at reaching sobriety, and home environment can all play a role. For those with more severe or long-term addictions that have recurred despite previous treatment, an inpatient or PHP rehab may provide the intensity needed to finally overcome addiction.

The advice of trained clinical professionals and addiction counselors is invaluable when weighing options for treatment. Working collaboratively with rehab intake coordinators through consultations and assessments is key to gaining insight into what level of care will give each individual the greatest chance for achieving sobriety. Ongoing support and guidance from these experts as a customized treatment plan is implemented can also improve the likelihood of long-term success.

Success often relies heavily on appropriate program selection to address the individual’s unique needs. Collaborating closely with rehab intake coordinators and clinical advisors when choosing a program can help ensure the best path forward on the road to recovery.
